There are quite a few details still up in the air, but one thing is for sure, schools will need to get the word out on how they’re operating in attempts to combat Covid19. It’s hard to imagine elementary school students being greeted on the first day of school with signs that are necessary but scary.
But if we can be conscientious about the signs in the schools, we can keep students safer without the scare. Here’s an example of a school safety sign we created. Its a floor decal. What student wouldn’t want to stand in the shoes of their school mascot?

The electrical work during construction begins, and there are changes you must manage while meeting timelines to ensure you pass inspection. No one wants to be waiting on panel labels or tags when they need to be installed before the inspection begins. But it’s pretty common that rush orders come in for 1 to 20 engraved signs needed to replace ones that have outdated data or fill in for missing ones that were not in the original spec. Sometimes, when changes were made to the project, the requirements for electrical labels isn’t updated along with the spec.
While there are dozens of reasons electrical contractors need to re-order engraved labels in a rush, if there’s a solution to avoiding the fire drill for last-minute tags, we’ve never seen nor heard of it. But what we can tell you is that when our customers need engraved signs in a rush, we always come through.

When you engrave signs, tags or labels, often you choose the size of the engraved sign and the font size. However, these two factors in combination lead to an engraved sign that fits its environment and are readable. So how should proceed? Read on, and view our short video with more information.
Engraved Tags Factor 1: Sign Dimensions
Often, our customers come to us with predetermined dimensions for their sign. The most common reasons the dimensions are a set factor:
Matching existing signage that has already has uniform set dimensions
The environment where the engraved tag will be placed only allows for tags of certain dimensions
A job spec has dictated the dimensions of the sign
Two factors in combination lead to an engraved sign that fits its environment and are readable
Engraved Signs Factor 2: Text/font Size
Just because the dimensions of the engraved sign are a set factor doesn’t mean that the text or font size isn’t also given. An order might list a 3 inch by 5 inch engraved tag with 1/2 inch letters. The size of the letters may have been chosen because of a few reasons
Past successful projects with that font and font size
Carried over from several job specs regardless of the success of the project

Choosing the primary factor
The truth is, the dimensions of the engraved sign, the font and the font size must work in combination to produce a readable engraved tag. Here’s how to choose the primary factor:
Must the dimensions of the sign match existing signage to be acceptable? The answer is usually less if the signs are placed in settings where visual If yes, the size/dimensions of the tag is your primary factor.
Does the environment in which your engraved tag will be placed call for the size of the tag to be restricted? If yes, the size/dimensions of the tag is your primary factor.
Has the job spec called for exact sign dimensions but not text size? If yes, the size/dimensions of the tag is the primary factor.
Has the job spec called for exact text size but not sign dimensions? If yes, the text size is the primary factor.
Does the spec call for exact text size and exact sign dimensions? If yes, and the sign is readable, we’re all good! If no, work with us to figure out the best combination of sign dimension and text size for your project. Check out our video that shows how we do that.

Producing the engraved sign
Great care should be taken in determine the dimensions of your tag and the text size before production starts. The biggest question that needs to be answered before production starts is: If the sign is not readable with the dimensions and text size given, should the size of the engraved sign change or the text size? This is most often important when the quantity to be produced is over 20 and/or when the material of the sign is premium (such as stainless steel.)

If you have questions or want to submit your order for your engraved sign, here’s how!
After we have engraved labels for electrical or construction, and the labels or tags have passed our quality assurance process, we take into consideration the chosen mounting option which is predetermined and by several factors. Factors for mounting include the surface the engraved sign will be mounted on and the environment the tag will be placed in.
It’s common that we consider four options for mounting these labels: self adhesive tape, drill holes for screws, drill holes for beaded chains or nylon ties, and magnetic labels. We can help our customers determine the best mounting options for their projects, and some jobs require the use of more than one mounting option.
Adhesive Tape Backing for Engraved Labels
For meany of the engraved tags and we send out, we put self adhesive tape on the back.
Does adhesive backing work well for engraved tags?
It is very strong and weather resistant. It makes the engraved sign very very difficult to remove. This adhesive backing on our engraved tag with adhesive backing is excellent for indoor or outdoor application. It’s a good alternative to screws. Using our double sided tape means your engraved tag immediately sticks to smooth and rough surfaces, and makes a long-lasting, weatherproof bond ideal for indoors and outdoors.
Installation of labels with adhesive backing
The industrial-strength double sided tape backing on your engraved labels means a quick installation for your engraved tags on panels, doors, machinery, metal, plastic, glass, cement, ceramic and more. Your tag will hold in place permanently and not be removed. However, if your engraved label will be exposed to harsh chemicals or solvents (if the area continually needs to be washed down or if there are solvents and oils that the label will come into contact with) adhesive may not be the right mounting option for your project.

Drill Holes for Engraved Labels
Engraved tag drill hole options
Using drill holes for 1) screws, 2) chains, or 3) straps used to mount engraved electrical device covers and switch plates has been a standard mounting option for a long while. Although this is an older method for mounting engraved signs and labels, using drill holes as the attachment method for your engraved tag to label your machinery is an excellent way to install your engraved signage. Drill holes can be used for fastening labels to a surface with screws, or for threading beaded chains or nylon ties through the holes to affix to the surface which is often used for pipes and engraved valve tags.
When to use drill holes for engraved labels
Any surface that should not be punctured should not use screws and chain or straps is a better method. Brass and stainless steel chain is very resistant to chemicals and weather, and is often used on pipes.
Magnetic Engraved Labels
What is a magnetic engraved tag?
Another option for mounting your engraved labels is one of the newest options for mounting engraved signs- it’s using sheet magnet. Sheet magnet is a thin layer of plastic embedded with particles of magnetized steel. There are millions of these steel particles in every sheet of this plastic, but the plastic remains flexible and adheres strongly to steel extremely well.
When to use a magnetic engraved sign
Because the label is flexible, it is additionally adherent as it can flex with the surface it is placed on. It’s a good option for identification of a curved or somewhat irregular surface.
Magnetic engraved labels adhere more strongly that you might think, but these labels aren’t considered a “permanent marking” care must be taken when choosing this type of engraved label mounting. Their ability to be removed and placed elsewhere is a strength however, when you may need to label something temporarily or to rotate or move the label to reflect a status that is ever changing.
